Mount Lewotobi Erupts Twice, Community in Need of Masks

ASARNews, Flores Timur – Mount Lewotobi in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted twice in the last 24 hours, forcing 4,436 people from the surrounding areas to evacuate. The eruptions of Mount Lewotobi resulted in the deaths of 10 people, six of whom were from one family, and caused damage to vital infrastructure, including 25 schools and 2,384 homes.

The East Flores Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) confirmed the occurrence of two major eruptions since the initial eruption on Sunday (November 3). "We urge all residents to remain alert and follow the instructions of the authorities. To date, 10 people have died as a result of being hit by debris, and at least 4,436 people have sought refuge in safe places," said Budi Setiawan, Head of BPBD East Flores.

The BPBD stated that evacuation posts have been set up in several locations around the disaster-prone area, equipped with public kitchens and medical facilities.

"The condition of the infrastructure in the affected area is quite concerning, with several bridges and roads blocked by landslide debris. This is slowing down the evacuation efforts, but we are continuing to deploy heavy equipment to open access," added Budi.

Residents are growing anxious due to the increasing eruptions. They are also in urgent need of masks and head coverings. “We need protection like masks and hope for help from the district government,” said Dominikus Podeng, the Head of Lewomada Village, as quoted by DetikBali media.

ASAR Humanity is still working to gather aid to assist those affected by the eruptions of Mount Lewotobi, with ongoing humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the impact of the eruptions.

From the latest observation, volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi remains quite active, and the public is advised to stay alert and avoid approaching the danger zone.
